Project 1: Self-Portrait

LECTURE

On week 4 of Design Principle class, midway through reviewing our exercises, Ms. Jinchi briefed us on our first project, creating a self-portrait while implementing the design principles. She advised us to watch the pre-recorded lecture uploaded on Microsoft Teams to predate the project and understand what a self-portrait is.

Fig 1.1

Self-Portrait is a self representation in the form of a drawing/painting/sculpture/design. It is a 'visual depiction' of the self. A self-portrait artwork represents the designer/artist; in other words, how he sees himself, what he's feeling (this could also be influenced by how others view us), and how he wants to be seen by others. It's not necessarily about creating a realistic image of yourself but rather an exercise in self-exploration. The most important thing is that we are expressing how we see ourselves.

Self-Exploration is the practice of creating a realistic image of yourself.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1 (15%): Self-Portrait

Create a portrait of yourself by applying the various principles that you had learnt through these weeks.

Learning Goals:
1. To apply design principles covered during the semester to your work.
2. To create an awareness of how materials and composition are critical to your communication.

Deadline:
Week 7

PROJECT 1

My Design Process

The following is a mind map on what defines me.

2. Idea Exploration and Description

Design #1

For my self-portrait design, I came up with two sketches. I used one of my characteristics for the first sketch to perceive myself. I am pretty clumsy and forgetful, so I always use calendars, sticky notes, or a notepad to remind myself of events. I also purposefully drew myself in a tired expression. The emphasis principle is used in this design.

I am still trying to add more elements to emphasize my clumsy and forgetful characteristics because it looks bland if I leave the design as it is. There is still a lot I could improve on, so this sketch will be going through significant changes.

I developed this design further. The idea is that I am isolating myself and/or drowning my tasks and reminders. Although now, I am conflicted about whether I should proceed with this design since the principle used doesn't complement well with the idea I am attempting to convey. I will have to hear from Ms. Jinchi regarding this design.

Design #2

For the second sketch, I illustrated my habit of constantly overthinking minor mistakes while implementing the contrast design principle. In the drawing, I added black soot/steam from my head to represent negative thoughts. This idea is derived from the anime 'Shadows House' as seen in Fig 2.2. The first variation didn't have much contrast, so I added black color, as seen in the second variation.

In the end, I decided to scrap this idea to focus on developing other designs.

Design #3

After several experiments, this is the last design I came up with. These sketches are inspired by the beginning scene of the movie Tinkerbell, where she finds her talent. Another inspiration is from the artist @qinniart on Instagram. The glowing golden effect in her artworks is executed so pleasingly.

The idea here is that my doodles came to life. This sketch is more focused on the design principle. By including the golden contrast, I was able to emphasize the doodles. From the three designs I did, I might proceed with design #3.

I decided to go with Design #3's first layout as my final composition. I changed the initial sketch a little by making my shirt and hair flow up to further emphasize the movement principle). I flipped the canvas in Fig 3.6 since I realized a little late that in the sketch, I was drawing with the wrong hand (whoops hahhah). I have also added my few favorite things in this self-portrait, such as tea, turtle, guitar, and flowers!

Final Outcome and Rationale

Fig 3.9 Final Outcome (Week 7)

From a very young age, I have always been fascinated by the works of the arts industry. By time, my interest in art grew, which drove me to pick up a pencil and doodle whatever my imagination got to offer. I would draw my favorite things, shows, and anything that I like. Drawing also became a medium for me to express my ideas in life. I sometimes find it difficult to verbalize my thoughts and feelings. Each stroke that fills the empty canvas shapes a figment of what I created in my mind, and that in itself is a tremendous thing. Thus, vindicated my desire to create art. This self-portrait expresses that. Overall, I like how this artwork turned out!

REFLECTION

I struggled a lot coming up with designs. Most of the feedbacks that were given by Ms. Jinchi went to my rough sketch designs because of it. I could have had faster progress if I wasn't dilly-dallying with my ideas. Though I do think that the time spent to come up with a design is worth it. Another thing I struggle with is probably trying to creating a rationale to my self-portraits, since I think the illustration can already speak for itself. I still enjoyed the entire process though. It's unexpectedly fun to analyze ourselves while creating a mindmap as it gives a good overview of myself. I had also learned to incorporate design principle into portraits since it was the other way around in the previous exercise.
