PROJECT 2

The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. This design is inspired by the movie ‘Coco’, which is a 2017 American computer-animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

I designed the 3 stages of this event which can be differentiated by the time of day. The first stage is the memorial. During Día de Muertos, the tradition is to build private altars ("ofrendas") containing the favorite foods and beverages, as well as photos and memorabilia, of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so the souls will hear the prayers and the words of the living directed to them. These altars are often placed at home or in public spaces such as schools and libraries, but it is also common for people to go to cemeteries to place these altars next to the tombs of the departed.

In the second stage, people bring candles and marigold to the grave of the deceased family members. Candles are lit to welcome the spirits back, and marigold is sometimes called Flor de Muerto ('Flower of Dead' which are thought to attract souls of the dead to the offerings.

For the final stage, It is believed the first place the dead visit is their gravesite. To prepare for their return, families will spend days cleaning the graves of the deceased and decorating them with cempasúchil, candles and photos. They want the spirits to know they are welcome, so the families leave gifts such as food and drink for the adults and toys for the children. Many families will also sleep beside the grave to spend time with the returned souls. It is not uncommon to see families playing games and eating by candlelight during Día de los Muertos.
