EXERCISES
Exercise 1 / Audio Dubbing
For this exercise, our task is to dub a movie clip from 'Munich (2005)' provided by Mr. Martin. To better understand the scene, I watched it and noticed that there were limited sound effects used in this particular scene. Therefore, I assumed that we should dub it based on our own interpretation. I created a spreadsheet to document all the scenes, sound effects, dubs, and their timing.
During one of our lectures, we formed a group and collaborated on a spreadsheet to list the sound effects, ambience, and their sources. Below is the spreadsheet we created:
Fig 1.1 List of sound effects from the clip
Afterward, I proceeded to create the audio dubbing. I used four tracks for the character dubs, corresponding to the four characters in the scene. Additionally, I utilized three tracks for sound effects and ambience. To source my sound effects, I exclusively used Freesound. Since I had a microphone on the same laptop I was working on, I performed the character dubbing using my own voice. As I couldn't produce distinct voices, I employed the pitch-shift effect in Premiere Pro to alter the pitch and create dialogue for each character.
Here is the result.

Exercise 2 / Sound Shaping
Our task is to apply sound effects for:
- Voice of phone call
- Voice coming from inside of closet
- Voice of toilet/bathroom
- Understanding cave
Exercise?
Mr. Martin tasked us to ask ChatGPT some questions regarding Color Correction and Color Grading and confirm its answers in Google. The following are the results from the task
What is Color Correcting?
Color correcting is the process of adjusting the colors in an image or video to make them appear more natural, accurate, and balanced. This involves adjusting the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and color balance of the footage to fix any color issues and to ensure that the colors look as they would in real life. Color correction is often used to fix color casts, incorrect white balance, exposure issues, and other color-related problems that can occur during shooting. The goal of color correction is to create a consistent and natural look throughout the footage, so that it appears more pleasing to the eye and better tells the intended story.
What is Color Grading?
Color grading is the process of creatively altering the colors of an image or video to achieve a desired visual style or mood. Unlike color correction, which aims to make colors look natural and balanced, color grading involves manipulating the colors in a more subjective way. It involves adjusting the brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue of specific color ranges within the footage to create a certain look or atmosphere. Color grading can be used to enhance the emotional impact of a scene, to create a certain aesthetic or style, or to help tell the story in a more compelling way. It's often used in film and video production to add a cinematic or stylized look to the footage.
What is the differences between Color Correction and Color Grading?
On the other hand, color grading is the process of creatively altering the colors of an image or video to achieve a specific visual style or mood. This involves adjusting the colors in a more subjective way, such as changing the hue, saturation, and brightness of specific color ranges within the footage. The goal of color grading is to add a certain aesthetic or style to the footage, and it's often used to enhance the emotional impact of a scene or to create a certain mood or atmosphere.
In summary, color correcting is a technical process that focuses on fixing any color issues, while color grading is a creative process that focuses on altering the colors to achieve a specific look or mood.
Are both Color Correction and Color Grading necessary while editing video? Or just do one of them?
Color correction is necessary to ensure that the footage looks natural and balanced, and to fix any color issues that may have occurred during filming. This process is essential for creating a cohesive and consistent look throughout the footage.
Therefore, while color correction is necessary, color grading may or may not be required depending on the desired outcome of the video. However, both processes are important tools that can help to create a more polished and professional final product.
Reflecting on my recent audio editing exercises, I'm proud of the progress I've made and the knowledge I've gained. Starting with limited experience, I've improved significantly through practice and a willingness to learn. These exercises taught me the importance of attention to detail, where small adjustments can greatly enhance audio quality. I developed a good ear, learning to identify and fix issues like clicks and uneven volumes. Patience and persistence were key, as audio editing takes time and focus. Most importantly, I discovered the power of creativity in audio editing, enjoying the process of making the audio unique and captivating. Overall, these exercises have been a rewarding journey, and I feel more confident and excited to continue growing my audio editing skills in the future.
