Final Project: Physical Action Sequence Animation

INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project (40%)
Interim deadlines, see previous pages. There will be milestone check due each week so it will be critical to maintain the schedule or you will fall behind quite quickly.

To complete this assignment, students are required to document/compile their contribution of Final Project animation clips through e-portfolio. Each progress should be clearly labelled, explained and dated in the blog entries.

Deadline:
Week 5

FINAL PROJECT

For our final project, we are tasked to animate a 5 second physical action sequence using our character we designed from project 1. The action sequence must involve physical movement, such as a fight, chase, or sports-related activity. Develop a clear understanding of the desired outcome, key actions, and the emotions you want to convey in the scene.

Storyboard

We are to make a storyboard that visualizes the key moments, actions, and emotion of the scene. We must incorporate variety of camera shots, angles, and visual continuity to enhance the visual storytelling.

I decided to animate the scene where Yumeko is first introduced. I feel like that scene is the best way to introduce my character.

For the storyboard, I used a template I found online. It was originally longer but I cut it down to two pages since the final animation only needed to be 5 seconds long.

Scene 2

After I'm done with the storyboard, I went ahead to animate it! I started on scene 2 and drew out the background first. This is because it's easier to match the character to the background rather than the other way around. I made sure to use the same colors as I did with the environmental design/character layout design.

Afterward, I made a rough animation on how the scene would play out. I did a lot of revisions and experiments for this scene. Timing really affects the output of the animation. I used a vector layer so that I can adjust the lines accordingly and have it stay consistent.

Here is how it turned out after the coloring and shading process. I used paint bucket tool to fill the colors throughout the animation. I didn't have a layer for the shadows and instead focused on the light instead. I used color Dodge for the lighting. Then, I have an overlay on top of everything to give ambience.

Scene 3

After I'm done with scene 2, I proceeded to animate scene 3. Same as before, I stated off with the background. I used the same colors as I did with scene 2 to make sure it looks like it happened at the same place.

When I'm done with the background, I made a rough animation for scene 3. I used vector layer to adjust the location of the line accordingly. This helps make the animation have a smooth and consistent line, and animating a whole lot easier.

Visual Effects

I did the visual effects on after effects. Scene 1 relies heavily in editing. I made sure to have the motion blur on since it looks awkward without it.

Fig 4.1 Scene 1 on After Effects

For scene 2, I purposefully left out a frame on where Yumeko jumped. This is so that I can add a camera shake into the animation.

Fig 4.2 Scene 2 on After Effects

For scene 3, the camera starts from the bottom, and goes up further to reveal Yumeko. Since scene 3 plays right after scene 2, I made the camera move from up to bottom to make it as if she just landed. After she landed, the camera shakes a bit, this is done by using the position thing in after effects. The camera lens blur effect enhances this movement.

Final Animation

Here is the final result for the animation! I used Laufey and beabadobee's song collaboration named 'A Night to Remember' since I thought the beginning instrumental part suits this scene :)

FEEDBACK

I didn't ask for feedback from Mr. Kamal since I was in a hurry to submit the final animation :')

REFLECTION

This project was so fun to make! I'm pretty glad of how everything turned out, but of course there are still a plenty of room for me to improve. I hope to learn more about animation and become good!!!
