Task 1: Create an empathy map and define the problem statement - Group (30%)
You are to form into groups for this project. There must be at least 1 member who is from a different discipline in your group. Choose a group leader and begin selecting a project from the provided list. You will need to make an appointment with the expert you have selected from the list, for an interview. Produce a questionnaire that will help your group in defining the problem to be investigated. You should ensure you understand the targeted audience or users, their needs and the problems that underlie the development of that particular product to solve the identified problem. You should also make plans to visit the targeted audience’s premise and conduct a research of their issues and concerns. Upon gathering the data, analyse and produce a report to define the problem statement along with the data analysis and conclusions made.

Project Timeline

Fig 0.0 Timeline

For this module, we're operating under a time constraint, with the submission deadline accelerated to week 11 due to the upcoming event, INNOFEST (The International Innovation Festival). Given that this project is live, the business school will incorporate the final selected outcomes for their participation in INNOFEST. Additionally, the final chosen App Design will be coded by collaborators from the School of IT. Therefore, the winning team may need to communicate with them on the final format of outcomes, etc.

TASK 1

Week 1

In the first week of class, Ms. Lilian instructed us to divide ourselves into 3 separate groups with a balanced specialization. The group I'm in is named "The Hungry Step Family".

  1. 0358362 / Adifa Putri Harisyam | Entertainment Design
  2. 0354969 / Derin | Digital Animation (Group Leader)
  3. 0354952 / Glen Owen | Entertainment Design
  4. 0356929 / Konomi Hoshikawa | UI/UX
  5. 0362419 / Leem Sejin | Digital Animation
  6. 0354047 / Takuto Hozumi | UI/UX

We started on our first task, which is to create an empathy map and defining the problem statement. This is done by listing a set of questionnaires to ensure we understand the targeted audience or users, their needs and the problems that underlie the development of that particular product to solve the identified problem.

Not much work done this week as the guidelines are confusing to understand. So far, we appointed a time for a meeting with the client, whose name is Rayhan from the business school of Taylor's University. The following are the project brief and pitch video provided by the client.

Week 2

In week 2, we started creating our survey questionnaires for homeowners to understand their preferences and challenges. Adifa, Konomi, and I worked on the survey questionnaires while the others analyzed the pitch video. Survey Questionnaires were divided into 2 sections:

Demographics

  1. What is your age range?
  2. What is your gender?
  3. What is your employment status?
  4. What is your martial status?
  5. What is your household income?

Understanding User's Preferences

  1. How frequently do you use online platforms to find or offer contracting services?
  2. How important is it for you to have access to reviews and ratings when selecting contractors or clients?
  3. How do you typically search for and select contractors for your projects?
  4. What qualities are most important to you when hiring a contractor? (e.g., reliability, expertise, affordability)
  5. Have you ever hired a contractor for home improvement? If yes, what are some suggestions on what can be improved?
  6. How much would you set a budget when hiring a contracting service? and for what services?
  7. What factors are most important to you when considering new projects?

Once we have compiled enough responses, it was time to analyze them to create our empathy map and user persona for the homeowners. We had also hold a meeting with our client that lasted for well over an hour since we had a lot of questions for the client and also empathize with him. In the end, we made 2 empathy maps, one for homeowners and one for the client. Looking back, we should've made one for the contractors as well in order for better user experience.

Afterwards, the client provided us with some references to guide our work. These include materials for the UI/UX design and the pitch video.

    REFLECTION

It took me a considerable amount of time to grasp the tasks at hand, primarily due to the perplexing nature of the instructions provided. Additionally, the project brief lacked comprehensive details regarding the app's features and its operational framework. However, upon gaining clarity, we managed to lay the groundwork for Task 1. I am pleased to note that our group exhibited effective collaboration throughout this process. Our workflow proceeded seamlessly, and our communication with the client was both clear and concise. In summary, I am content with the performance of my team thus far and the ongoing progress of the project.
